Redditch United manager Martin Sockett has named defender Paul Smith as his new assistant at Valley Stadium.

Smith played more than 250 games for Alvechurch and Studley where he earned a reputation as a no-nonsense defender.

"Paul will bring something different to the table and will be able to work with players on a one-to-one basis," Sockett told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"I have known him for a number of years both as a player and a manager and I'm looking forward to building on that."

Smith is already looking forward to the new season so that he can help bring some passion and pride to the side ahead of the new campaign.

"In the past there have not been enough Redditch-based players at the club and this is something we are looking to change," he said.

"There are a lot of good players living in the town who want to play for Redditch United and they bring a particular passion to the club.

"There are also plenty of good youngsters around and that means a good future if we can bring them on board."
