Jon Shaw's 87th-minute strike capped a well-earned victory for Gateshead at play-off chasing Rushden & Diamonds.
Shaw struck from 18 yards, just moments after Martin Brittain had seen his shot rebound off the crossbar.
The Tynesiders went ahead after 30 minutes when Craig Nelthorpe's cross was diverted into his own net by defender Luke Prosser.
Rushden's best chance fell to Aaron O'Connor with the score at 1-0, but his header came back off the crossbar.
