Harrogate Town have signed goalkeeper Kieran Gonzalez after allowing Craig Dootson to go out on loan.
Dootson has rejoined his former club Fleetwood until December.
Town manager Simon Weaver told BBC Radio York that Australian Gonzalez, 21, had come recommended after trials with Everton and Portsmouth.
He said: "He's come over and he wants to make a serious living out of the game. Credit to him for having the courage to do that."
Weaver added: "He's a big unit, about 6ft 3in and he looks physically just right for a goalkeeper whilst having a lot of agility as well.
"I know he had some games at Stockport and then he got offered a deal at Stalybridge after a few games impressing their in pre-season.
"But he chose to have a go at Gateshead - the next step up in the Conference.
"I believe he did well there and I spoke to people there about him.
"But it sometimes happens and another name popped up for the manager there and he went for someone with league experience.
"So I was straight on the phone and invited him down to training. It all went well and we signed him."
Gonzalez is expected to make his debut against Vauxhall Motors.
