Stuart Whitehead calls for a promotion push at Telford

AFC Telford captain Stuart Whitehead
Whitehead says his team-mates must click into gear very soon

AFC Telford skipper Stuart Whitehead has told his team-mates they must pull their weight if the club is to win promotion to the Blue Square Premier.

"It's a collective responsibility - we've got to be sharper," Whitehead told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"Last season everything we hit was going in, so we've got to be more clinical and take our chances.

"We keep saying we're a big club that deserves promotion - but it's down to us to earn it."

Telford were within eight minutes of promotion last season, but lost to a late goal in the Blue Square North play-off final at Gateshead.

That was the culmination of a physically draining season that saw the team reach the first round proper of the FA Cup, the semi-finals of the FA Trophy, and the final of the Setanta Shield - which they won on penalties against Forest Green.

This season, the side has hovered outside the play-off places and only won four games at the Bucks Head.

"We've not played that differently from last season, but how long can we say we're close to clicking?" he asked.

"There can be no ifs or buts in 2010. We've got to be clinical in one box, mean in the other - and start winning."
