Lewes ask fans to help with debt

Blue Square South

Lewes FC have asked fans to find another £30,000 to help save the club.

The Rooks face a winding-up petition in the High Court on 2 September over an unpaid debt of £110,000 owed to HM Revenues & Customs.

Lewes already have a private donation of £30,000 and a similar sum could ensure their short-term survival.

A club statement read: "HMRC might not oppose a staged repayment plan if Lewes demonstrates a serious intention to manage their way through the debt."

The statement added: "Going into administration can't be ruled out as a last resort.

"But this might also mean that the club will not be able to meet existing debts in full, will incur the additional cost of the administrators, could still be wound up if the administrator cannot find a buyer and would trigger a 10-point reduction in the Blue Square South."
