Southport captain Adam Flynn was relieved his side claimed a 3-2 win over Blue Square North new boys Gloucester City on Saturday.
Goals from Earl Davis, Matty McGinn and Ciaran Kilheeney gave Liam Watson's side the opening three points.
"They were always going to be there for the full 90 minutes," Flynn told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"We shouldn't have let them get that close to us. But all credit to them they battled and made it tough for us."

But the 24-year-old admits its going to be a tough season for the side if they are to get into the promotion play-offs and he believes the team spirit at the club will be key.
"That all starts in the changing room, if the lads haven't got that team spirit when they sign, then they won't last long at this club," Flynn continued.
"You can go to some places and find it is a bit dry and a bit down. But you'll never find that in a team that I'm in.
"The team spirit and the moral is very good even though we didn't win many games in pre-season. The lads know what each other can do and we proved that against Gloucester."
The Sandgrounders' next fixture is away to Blyth Spartans on Tuesday evening with kick-off at 1945 BST.
