Ambitious non-league club Poole Town have had plans for a new stadium approved by the local council.

The proposals for a multi-purpose venue at Branksome recreation ground were passed by Poole Borough Council.

Poole were denied promotion to the Southern League after winning this season's Wessex Premier League as their Tatnam home did not meet league rules.

Poole assistant manager Taffy Richardson told BBC Radio Solent: "It's brilliant for the local area."

He added: "I'm a local resident too, and not only do the football club get a fantastic new home, but everyone in the area benefits.

"Football is such a positive thing and can touch people's lives, and all the local children will now have somewhere to go and learn not just sporting skills, but also social skills."

The project will be funded by the club and external grants, and includes a new 150-seat stand and social facilities.

The current Branksome Rec pavilion will be re-furbished and modernised and three new all-weather multi-use games areas will be created and made available for use by local schools and the community.

The council are also prepared to consider an application for developer funding for elements with a community benefit.
