Meredith was on a season-long loan from neighbours Shrewsbury
AFC Telford United have missed out on James Meredith, who was on loan last season from Shrewsbury, to York City.
"We prepared an offer for James but we knew York and another club were also in the hunt and were offering a healthier package," said a club spokesman.
Four players have already signed new one-year deals at the Bucks Head.
Jon Adams, Jamie Vermiglio, Steve Jagielka and the club's player of the year Carl Rodgers have all pledged their immediate futures to Telford.
And manager Rob Smith told BBC Radio Shropshire he is waiting to hear from four more: "The vibes from the rest are positive, even though we've had to lower our pay levels slightly.
"I'm looking to keep the crux of last season's squad."
Ryan Young, Liam Blakeman and skipper Stuart Whitehead have been retained, with extended options taken on Lee Vaughan and Andy Brown.
Vaughan and Brown were both being watched by Football League scouts as Telford chased but just fell short of promotion to the Blue Square Premier.
Left-back Meredith will join York on returning from his family home in Australia.
