Glossop North End 0-2 Whitley Bay

Whitley Bay
Bay play in the Northern League Division One - the ninth tier

Whitley Bay won their second FA Vase in eight years with a deserved 2-0 win over Glossop North End at Wembley.

Strikers Lee Kerr and Paul Chow did the damage in the sun in the first half.

Bay almost scored a remarkable opener when Adam Johnston's effort from 60 yards was tipped onto the crossbar by North End keeper Matt Cooper.

Nick Bailey hit the woodwork for Glossop, before Kerr got away from his marker for the opener and Chow clipped the ball over Cooper to seal the win.

Bay boss Ian Chandler won the Vase as a player with the Hillheads club in 2002.

Whitley Bay striker and goalscorer Lee Kerr told BBC Radio Newcastle:

"It is a dream come true, I don't know how it scored it. I nipped through a couple of defenders and saw the keeper edging to his right and slipped it past him.

"This is the best footballing day of my life, our fans have been brilliant throughout the season not just today."

Glossop manager Steve Young told BBC Radio Manchester:

"For long periods of the game, we played the better football. We don't score enough and we let too many goals in and that's been our Achilles heel again.

"I thought we were the better team. I'm proud as punch - I thought they were outstanding.

"We could have folded at 2-0 down at half-time but we didn't. We came out in the second half and I thought we played the better football.

"I don't think they'll have any regrets. They'll be disappointed but I thought they showed their true character. I thought we were outstanding.

"It raises the profile of Glossop North End. This is just the beginning."
