Pilgrims collapse to heavy defeat

Boston United crashed to a humiliating 5-0 defeat by Nantwich Town in the Unibond Premier Division.

The sides were evenly matched until Ashley Carter's 65th-minute opener.

Michael Lennon added a second in the 81st minute and went on to complete his hat-trick before substitute Dave Walker rounded off the rout in added time.

Midfielder Stewart Talbot told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "When the goals started going in we didn't look like we wanted to be there."

With manager Steve Welsh absent because of illness it was left to Talbot, who did not play in the match, to take charge of the side.

After the Pilgrims' eighth home league defeat of the season Talbot admitted: "This is probably as low as it gets for me, I understand how managers feel now.

"I took full responsibility for the team and we capitulated and that reflects on me personally.

"When the crowd are shouting that they don't think the team's putting enough effort in that's what disappoints me most, not when someone kicks the ball in the stand or doesn't put the right pass in.

"I hope the players realise that the fans are paying to see us giving their all for them and that wasn't the case after the first goal went in."

In the Unibond First Division South, Stamford extended their unbeaten league run to 13 games with Phil Stebbing's 59th-minute goal giving the Daniels a 1-0 victory over Gresley Rovers.

David Brown's equaliser five minutes from time earned Grantham Town a 1-1 draw at home to Quorn, after the Gingerbreads' Adam Sturgess had been sent off for a professional foul.
