Trinity sunk by last-gasp penalty

Simon Bird
Bird's brace took his tally to five goals this season for Gainsborough

A controversial 89th-minute Sean Newton penalty saw Gainsborough Trinity lose 3-2 at Droylsden in Blue Square North.

The Blues took the lead through Simon Bird before Steve Beck scored twice in three minutes to put Droylsden ahead.

Bird levelled in the 50th minute before defender Nicky Ellis was dismissed for a challenge which led to the penalty.

Manager Steve Charles told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "It was a scandalous decision, they tangled and fell over but there's no way it was a foul."

Charles felt Trinity deserved at least a point from the game.

He admitted: "We had a fantastic move late in the second half when we missed an open goal and if we'd put that away we'd have come away with the three points.

"It's a very fine line, the lads have dug in and played well but to be fair Droylsden showed a good performance as well.

"I think a draw would have been a fair result, and it should have been a draw."
