Worcester sign goalkeeper Clarke

Worcester City have signed goalkeeper Dave Clarke on non-contract terms as cover for the injured Danny McDonnell.

City manager Richard Dryden says McDonnell will be out of action for at least two weeks.

"It's a deep wound so he's going to be out for a couple of weeks, but hopefully not too much longer," Dryden told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"It's a blow because he's been enjoying it so he's very disappointed, as is the rest of the squad."

McDonnell picked up the injury in the dying minutes of the 0-0 draw at Basingstoke Town when he came off worse in a late tackle with the home team's substitute Carl Gibbs.

Dryden is pleased to have been able to bring in an experienced goalkeeper he knows reasonably well.

"He was at Gresley Rovers and he played a little bit for us at Tamworth, while he has also played for Tamworth this season," said Dryden.

"I've given Dale Belford a call, who is [former City goalkeeper] Cameron's dad, and he's recommended him while I've seen him play once or twice.

"Dale's experienced in the goalkeeping side of it and you've got to take his opinion on board."

City will also be without their skipper Craig Wilding who is suspended following his sending-off at Weston-super-Mare.

David Bampton was due to train on Thursday night and Dryden says he is desperate to get back into the action after going down with an injury after only eight minutes of the opening match at Bognor Regis Town.

Maybe Chelmsford and Wimbledon are going to be up there, but I can't work out who the rest of the frontrunners are going to be

As for Fisher Athletic, Dryden admits he doesn't really know what to expect from them as, like so many clubs in Blue Square South, they appear to blow hot and cold.

"They would want more points than they have got at the moment, but they get beaten one week and then they go and beat Dorchester by four," said Dryden.

"They've got the capability to score a lot of goals and, from what I've seen so far, it's a topsy-turvy league.

"Maybe Chelmsford and Wimbledon are going to be up there, but I can't work out who the rest of the frontrunners are going to be," he added.

Peter McMillan will be BBC Hereford and Worcester's reporter at St George's Lane for Saturday's match against strugglers Fisher Athletic.

He will bring first news on goals and other major developments into Sport on Saturday with Trevor Owens, which will be on air on BBC Hereford and Worcester from 1400BST.
