Champions chase hots up
Turu Flores of Deportivo La Coruna holds off AC Milan's Thomas Helveg
Deportivo will be looking for three points against Milan

As the first phase of the Champions League enters its final day, only three places in the last 16 remain up for grabs.

Tuesday's eight qualifiers will be joined by Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen, AC Milan, Juventus and Barcelona, who will progress no matter what happens on Wednesday.

But six sides are still fighting it out for the final three places in the second phase.

  • Qualified teams: Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, Valencia, FC Basle, Real Madrid, AS Roma, Inter Milan, Ajax, Juventus, Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen, AC Milan, Barcelona.
  • Aiming to qualify: Newcastle, Feyenoord, Lens, Club Brugge, Galatasaray, Lokomotiv Moscow,

If two or more teams finish the first phase level on points, Uefa will use the following criteria in order to determine the final placings:

  • Points gained in group matches between the teams in question.

  • Goal difference from group matches between the teams.

  • Away goals scored in group matches between the teams.

  • Overall goal difference.

Group E

Barring an unlikely six-goal defeat in Kiev, Juventus will top group E.

Dynamo will qualify as well if they beat the Italians, but a defeat would allow the winners of Feyenoord v Newcastle to overtake them.

A draw for Dynamo would end Feyenoord's hopes but still leave the Ukrainians vulnerable to a Newcastle victory.

Group F

Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen are already through, but United need a point at home to their German rivals to secure top spot.

Leverkusen need to win 3-2 or better to sneak past the Old Trafford side.

Group G

AC Milan have this group effectively wrapped up, a fact which Deportivo La Coruna will hope takes the edge off their game.

Deportivo need to win at San Siro to join Milan in the second phase.

Lose or draw and Lens can take the runners-up spot - either on points or overall goal difference - with a win at eliminated Bayern Munich.

Group H

Barcelona are out of sight but Bruges, Galatasaray and Lokomotiv Moscow are all still in the hunt for second.

Bruges are in control of their own destiny, knowing a win in Moscow will take them through regardless of what happens elsewhere.

Galatasaray must win at Barcelona and hope Bruges either lose or draw.

But a Turkish failure at Nou Camp would allow Lokomotiv to finish second by beating Bruges.
