| Wenger hails classy Gunners ![]() Henry scored twice in a dominant Arsenal display Arsene Wenger was full of praise for his Arsenal side after watching them thrash PSV Eindhoven 4-0 to cure their European travel sickness. Arsenal achieved their first away victory in Europe for 19 months with goals from Gilberto Silva, Freddie Ljungberg and Thierry Henry, who scored twice. Gilberto's strike after just 20 seconds was the fastest in Champions League history and it set the Gunners up for their second straight win in Group A.
Wenger played down his own role in the victory, insisting: "I'm not a witch doctor, I'm just a football coach." But the Frenchman believes the result will give his players the confidence to ensure the result is not a one-off. "It means a lot to them. You could see the reaction in the dressing room," said Wenger. "It was a deserved victory and I want to congratulate my team because they were intelligent under pressure. "The team needed that to grow more. That's why it's an important result. "We go step by step with a strong belief. This team has a strong ambition and desire. They want to improve and I believe we improve in every game.
"I never felt we had an away problem. "In the championship, we did very well away from home but when you don't have the results, you have to say it does exist and you have to sort it out. "This result will convince us that we will be as strong away from home as we are at home. "It's certainly significant because it puts us in a good position to qualify for the second group stage." Vital win Arsenal were lifted by the return of Dennis Bergkamp, who was playing his first away fixture in Europe since the 2000 Uefa Cup final. And the Dutch striker played his part in an impressive attacking display after making the trip to Eindhoven by car. "It was a good team to play against for us. They allowed us to play football," said Bergkamp. "We expected them to come out very strong and agressive and they did that, but we got just the start we wanted. "It was vital for us to get a good win here and it has come good for us." |
