| Leverkusen humiliated ![]() AC Milan beat Lens 2-1 in Group F Bayer Leverkusen, last season's losing finalists, suffer a humiliating defeat - plus a round-up of Wednesday's other games. Group E Italian champions Juventus had to make do with a 1-1 draw at Feyenoord despite taking the lead. Juventus went ahead after 31 minutes with Mauro Camoranesi putting the visitors ahead. But their lead was erased when Feyenoord striker Pierre Van Hooijdonk equalised after 74 minutes. The other match in the group saw Dynamo Kiev deservedly defeat Newcastle 2-0. Maksim Shatskikh and Aliksandr Khatskevich scored either side of half-time to give the Ukrainian side victory. Group F Predrag Djordjevic scored a hat-trick for Olympiakos as they inflicted an embarrassing 6-2 defeat on Bayer Leverkusen - last season's losing finalists in this competition. Leverkusen went in front through a Dimitris Eleftheropoulos own goal midway through the first half. But they conceded an equaliser within five minutes as Silva Giovanni scored for Olympiakos. It got worse for Leverkusen when they went behind after Stelios Giannakopoulos added a second for the home side after 38 minutes. Djordjevic extended Olympiakos' lead just before half-time and he made it four with a 64th minute penalty. He completed his hat-trick with a 73rd minute goal and, even though Bernd Schneider grabbing a consolation effort for the visitors, Par Zetterberg scored a sixth for the home side. Manchester United went behind to an early goal by Israeli side Maccabi Haifa before running out 5-2 winners. Yaniv Katan gave the visitors a shock lead but goals from Ryan Giggs, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Juan Sebastian Veron, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Diego Forlan put the home side into an unassailable lead. Forlan's penalty was his first competitive goal fro the club while Rafi Cohen added a consolation effort for Haifa. Group G
A Filipo Inzaghi double within three minutes helped Italian side AC Milan to a 2-1 victory against their French opponents Lens at the San Siro. Milan had been held for the first-half but finally broke the Lens resistance after 58 minutes the Italian international Inzaghi scored. He added a second soon before Daniel Moreira pulled one back with 15 minutes left but it was not enough as Milan held on. A Roy Makaay hat-trick proved just enough to help Deportivo la Coruna to 3-2 victory in an exciting contest against Bayern Munich. Makaay put Deportivo two up before interval before Hasan Salihamidzic began a Bayern fight-back when he pulled one back after 59 minutes. Brazilian striker Giovane Elber levelled five minutes later but Makaay struck after 77 minutes to give the Spaniards victory. Group H
Barcelona emerged 3-2 winners at their Nou Camp stadium despite a late scare from Club Brugge. Luis Enrique gave Barcelona the lead after just five minutes against their Belgian visitors who made the Catalan giants sit up and take note when they levelled. Timmy Simons scored from the spot for Brugge but before midfielder Gaizka Mendieta restored Barcelona's lead on 40 minutes. Argentine striker Javier Saviola put coach Louis van Gaal's home side 3-1 ahead two minutes before the interval. Brugge's Gaetan Englebert scored with five minutes to go to set up a tense finale but Barcelona held out for the win. Galatasaray beat a Russian club for the first time when they began their Champions League campaign with an impressive 2-0 win at Lokomotiv Moscow. Mohammed Sarr, on as a substitute for Hasan Sas, put the Turkish side ahead on 72 minutes and Arif Erdem sealed victory nine minutes from time. Galatasaray had failed to score in three previous visits to Moscow and keeper Ali Mondragon made sure his side kept a clean sheet with several good saves. |
