Newcastle comfortably beat Zeljeznicar to confirm their place in the money-spinning group stages of the Champions League.

Kieron Dyer, Lomana Tresor LuaLua and Hugo Viana and Alan Shearer were the goalscorers for the Magpies in what was billed as their biggest game for five years.

Dyer struck midway through the first half with a delicate chip to add to his goal from the first leg which Newcastle won 1-0 in Bosnia.

And Lomana Tresor LuaLua celebrated in his trademark multiple somersault style after he extended Newcastle's lead with a clinical finish from 18 yards.

Viana and Shearer scored after the interval when the visitors had lost their motivation.

But Zeljeznicar had given the home side evidence that they should be taken seriously before the opening goal.

Sanel Jahic blazed a 35-yard shot just high of Magpies keeper Shay Given's goal.

Soon after, a Radonja shot almost squirmed through the legs of the Newcastle stopper who gathered at the second attempt.

Newcastle heeded the warnings the visitors had given them and striker Shearer will be disappointed he did not give them the lead after 21 minutes.

He escaped his markers to meet left-back Oilvier Bernard's cross but put his powerful header wide.

The home fans did not have long to wait for the opener though, with Dyer obliging to settle Newcastle nerves.

Zeljeznicar failed to pick up the England midfielder on one of his trademark runs forward but his St James Park team-mate Nolberto Solano had no such trouble.

Solano's first time ball over the top of the opposition defence released Dyer who scored with his first touch which was a delicate angled chip over keeper Kennan Hasagic.
