Crisis in Egypt forces US to cancel football friendly

Protesters in Cairo
Anti-government protests in Egypt have affected sporting activities

The United States has cancelled its friendly with Egypt which was scheduled for 9 February in Cairo.

Egypt wanted the game as a warm-up match ahead of it's 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa in March.

But in a statement on its website US Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati said the game could not go ahead due to the crisis in Egypt.

"Due to the situation we agreed it was best to cancel the match," Gulati said.

The statement went on to thank the seven-time African champions for their "efforts in working through this situation."

Clashes between anti-government protesters and police have continued across large parts of the country for several days.

Last week the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) postponed league matches scheduled for the weekend.
