Ivory Coast earned a narrow 1-0 win over Zanzibar in the latest action at the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Dar-es-Salaam on Wednesday.
In the day's other game, Rwanda and Sudan played out a goalless draw in the regional tournament for East and Central Africa.
Ivory Coast are guests at the event and now have a chance of making the quarter-finals.
They are using the tournament as preparation for the CHAN in February.
"We played a tough team and we needed to keep the tempo high to show our commitment," Ivorian coach Kipre Bolou said.
Zanzibar boss Stewart Hall was disappointment that his side failed to get a point out of the game.
"We played slowly and we did not show much commitment - we only played well in the final 20 minutes," he said.
Zanzibar and Ivory Coast now both have three points from their two games in Group B so far, whilst Rwanda top the table thanks to a win and a draw and Sudan are bottom with only a point.
