The KFF's Sam Nyaweya says his group should run Kenyan football

The group which tried to organise the 2010 World Cup qualifier between Kenya and Nigeria without authority from Fifa has backed down.

But the Kenya Football Federation (KFF), which is not recognised by the world governing body, says it is not giving up its claim to run the sport as a whole.

The game could determine whether Nigeria make it to the World Cup in 2010 and will decide Kenya's Nations Cup hopes.

The Chairman of the KFF Sam Nyaweya told the BBC that they have pulled back from trying to arrange the match.

But he denied that this represented a victory for FKL.

"It is not a victory. Sometimes you have to look at the larger picture," he said.

"The national team does not belong to those guys - the national team belongs to the country."

And he said refused to give up the KFF's claim to run football in the country.

"One thing that you have to understand is that we are the legitimate office holders," he told the BBC.

He claimed that his group would win a case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport - the ultimate authority over sporting disputes - over the issue.

If the wrangling continues then Fifa could once again suspend the country from all international competition.
