Nigeria have recalled striker Obafemi Martins for the crucial World Cup tie against Mozambique in Abuja in October.

The 24-year-old former Newcastle player's last appearance for the Super Eagles was in the reverse fixture in Maputo five months ago.

He has had a chequered international career due to a perceived lackadaisical attitude towards past call-ups, but is adamant that he is often misunderstood.

"In the past I have not been lucky with injuries," he told BBC Sport.

Martins, who joined Wolfsburg in August, added: "I have missed international games due to such setbacks.

"It's rather unfortunate what has been said and written about me, but my commitment towards the national team has never wavered.

"Sadly we are in a precarious situation with regards World Cup qualification but we want to fight to the end.

"Many people have written us off completely but in football you never know."

Coach Shaibu Amodu has also recalled Charlton Athletic defender Sam Sodje while Denmark-based forward Peter Utaka and Chibuzor Okonkwo of Nigerian club Bayelsa have also been included.

The Super Eagles are already without striker Ikechukwu Uche after he damaged a cruciate ligament two weeks ago.

Uche is Nigeria's top scorer so far in the 2010 qualifiers with four goals and his absence will come as a huge blow because Nigeria face the daunting task of qualifying for South Africa 2010.

Nigeria are second in Group B with seven points, two behind leaders Tunisia.

The faltering Super Eagles need to win their final two matches while hoping the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia lose to Kenya or Mozambique to clinch first place.

Nigeria's final group match is away to the Harambee Stars of Kenya on 14 November.
