Big names left out of Egypt squad

Egypt coach Hassan Shehata has left three big-name strikers out of his squad to face Rwanda next month.

Mohamed Zidan, Amr Zaki and Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam have all been omitted from the line-up for the 2010 World Cup qualifier in Kigali.

Mido and Zaki are now playing their club football in Egypt, after mixed spells in the English Premier League.

Neither has scored in the opening three games of the league campaign for their new club, Cairo giants Zamalek.

They also missed July's Confederations Cup - Zaki through injury and Mido for tactical reasons.

Mohamed Zidan angered coach Shehata by leaving it to his German club Borussia Dortmund to inform Egypt that he was injured ahead of a recent friendly against Guinea.

Previously he had been left out of Shehata's selection for eight months after being accused of feigning injury to miss games.

The coach has not explained his decision to leave the players out.

Egypt are currently second in their 2010 qualifying group, three points behind leaders Algeria, with three of the six matches played.

Only the group winners will play in South Africa next year, whilst the top three teams go to the Nations Cup in Angola.

Shehata has four recognised strikers to choose from for the game against Rwanda - Ahmed Abdoul Raouf of Enppi, Sayed Hamdi of Petrojet, Haras el Hadoud's Ahmed Salama and Mohamed Al Gabas, who plays for Lierse, in Belgium.

The match is in Kigali on September 6.
