Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has pulled out of two World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Sudan citing family problems.

Black Stars coach Milovan Rajevac told BBC Sport that Appiah has asked to be excused "so he can attend to urgent family commitments".

Although Appiah has been without a club for more than a year, Rajevac insists the midfielder is crucial to Ghana's World Cup cause.

Rajevac said Appiah's withdrawal is a major blow for the country's hopes.

"He's a big player for us but for this match he will be unavailable", Rajevac said.

The Black Stars are already without Derek Boateng, Laryea Kingston, Asamoah Gyan and Rahim Ayew as they prepare to face Mali on 7 June and Sudan on 20 June.

The Serbian coach has moved to fill the void by recalling Junior Agogo who is expected link up with his team-mates in Accra on Friday.

"Asamoah Gyan is definitely injured and we can't count on him; Matthew Amoah has a light injury and we're not certain about his condition that's why we invited Agogo.

"He played well in the last Nations Cup and we hope he'll join the squad and help us", Rajevac added.

Agogo is Ghana's leading scorer in the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign thus far with four goals but was dropped for the last game against Benin after he went on strike at Zamalek.
