The sponsorship row over the league in Sierra Leone has been resolved

The much awaited Premier League of Sierra Leone will kick-off with fireworks on 21 March after a protracted sponsorship row.

The date was fixed after the telecoms operator Comium confirmed a US$50,000 sponsorship package which also includes four other partners.

On the opening day reigning champions Ports Authority take on the 2008 runners-up Kallon FC in a league game that will also double as a first ever Super Cup match.

The game will go to extra time and penalties if need to decide who claims the Super Cup, but the score after 90 minutes will count towards Premier League points.

The opening ceremony before the game is expected to be witnessed by President Ernest Bai Koroma and many other dignitaries.

It is hope that a big start to to the season will generate interest in the domestic game.

The opening weekend will kick-off with a bang with derbies across the country and it includes the biggest game in Sierra Leone as East End Lions meet arch-rivals Mighty Blackpool on Sunday.

Both sides finished in the top five last season and remain the best supported clubs in Sierra Leone despite the emergence of Kallon FC, Ports Authority, and Central Parad.

In something of a turn around Comium have become the league sponsors after their rivals Africell had initially been lined up to back the competition, which was due to begin in January.

However Africell refused to go through with the deal because they were unhappy with Comium's prominent branding on the stands at the National Stadium.
