A sponsorship dispute has led to a delay in the kick-off of Sierra Leone's premier league, which should have begun on 16 January.

Mobile phone company Africell is refusing to go ahead with a $335,000 sponsorship, as rival company Comium has a prominent advertising display at the league's main venue, the National Stadium in Freetown.

Africell say they will only go ahead with the deal if Comium's advertising is removed.

Comium helped the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) last year when world football's governing body Fifa insisted that renovations be made before the National Stadium could host 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

The seats were numbered and the stadium was painted in the colours of Comium, in an agreement with government.

We find ourselves in a difficult position as the National Stadium is not owned by the SLFA

Saidu Mansaray

Sierra Leone Premier League secretary-general Saidu Mansaray told BBC Sport that it leaves the league in a difficult situation.

"Africell has told us they would only sponsor the league if the Comium advertisement is effaced because it overshadows every other thing in the stadium," he said.

"We find ourselves in a difficult position as the National Stadium is not owned by the SLFA but by the government.

"Also we do have other things that need to be put in order before the league starts - we need all the 14 clubs to be fully registered but at the moment only six have registered."

Mansaray says that they have now approached Comium to sponsor the league as a back-up plan.

Eight of the top-flight teams use the National Stadium as their home ground.
