Favourites Nigeria made a winning start at the African Youth Championship in Rwanda on Monday.

Two goals from Kingsley Udoh and Yakubu Alfa helped the Flying Eagles to a 2-0 win over Egypt in group B.

Udoh headed in Alfa's cross after 35 minutes, before Alfa got his name on the score sheet with a fine strike.

Nigeria's next match is against South Africa on Thursday while Egypt face the Ivory Coast.

In Monday's other fixture in group B, South Africa narrowly beat the Ivory Coast 1-0.

Hosts Rwanda defeated Mali 2-1 while Ghana and Cameroon featured in 1-1 draw in Sunday's opening games in group A at Kigali's Amahoro stadium.

The top two teams in each group will not only make it to the semi-finals but also qualify for the Fifa under-20 World Cup in Egypt later this year.
