Monomotapa have won the Zimbabwe league title

Former Zimbabwe captain Norman Mapeza has won his first trophy as a coach, leading modest Harare club Monomotapa to the league title.

Monomotapa clinched the championship on Saturday ahead of defending champions Dynamos with one game of the season remaining.

Mapeza, who played for Galatasary in Turkey, saw his side held to a 0-0 draw at home by Chapungu to give Monomotapa an unbeatable 59 points.

Second-placed Dynamos lost 1-0 in southern Zimbabwe to Masvingo United to leave them on 55 points.

It means that 36-year-old Mapeza will now have to start preparing Monomotapa to represent Zimbabwe in next year's African Champions League instead of Dynamos, who reached this year's semi-finals.

Monomotapa will play Zanzibar's Miembeni in the first round, the winners of that will advance to face one of Mapeza's former clubs, South Africa's Ajax Cape Town
