Dynamos players in their 1998 Champions League campaign
Zimbabwean club Dynamos and Al Ahly made winning starts in Group A of the Champions League.
Dynamos beat Asec Mimosas 2-1 on Sunday, and in the Cairo derby, Egyptian giants Al Ahly beat their great rivals Zamalek by the same scoreline.
Dynamos triumph
In Harare, striker Edward Sadomba overcame the grief of losing an elder sister to score twice to seal the victory.
Portia Sadomba died on Friday and her brother was a doubtful starter for the opening fixture, but he struck in the 4th and 73rd minutes to give his team the win at Rufaro Stadium.
"Whether to play was a very difficult decision for me and my family. I opted to start because I know how much this fixture meant to my sister and my country," explained Sadomba.
Jean-Paul Mangoua Kesse was on target for Asec 10 minutes before half-time.
Dynamos showed that they are still a force to be reckoned with, some 10 years since losing to Asec in the 1998 Champions League final.
Ahly beat rivals - again
Ahly's Flavio opened the scoring for the five-time winners
In Cairo, Egyptian giants Al Ahly secured a 2-1 win over their local rivals Zamalek.
Both sides have won the competition five times, but it is Ahly who have been dominant in recent years and that trend continues after an absorbing match.
Angolan striker Flavio gave Al Ahly the lead just before the half hour mark.
But Zamalek struck back 15 minutes into the second half through Gamal Hamza's dramatic strike to make it 1-1.
Parity did not last long, five minutes later Ahly were in the lead again thanks to Ahmed Hassan, and they held on to take the win.
Egypt captain Hassan was playing his first game for Ahly after moving from Belgian side Anderlecht.
Zamalek had also been chasing the midfielder's signature.
Al Hilal win thriller in Group B
In Group B, a last-minute goal from Ifeanyi Onigbo gave Sudanese club Al Hilal a 3-2 victory over Enyimba of Nigeria.
Cletus Itodo put Enyimba ahead in the 35th minute, but Al Hilal captain Haitham Mustafa equalised from the penalty spot on 42 minutes.
Yousuf Mohamed gave Al Hilal the lead a minute after the break, with a shot from distance.
Stephen Worgu made it 2-2 in the 86th minute, before the late winner from Onigbo, himself a Nigerian.
Enyimba were reduced to 10 men in the 62nd minute when Okey Odita was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Al Hilal are looking to go one better than last year when they reached the semi-finals, while Enyimba are looking for a third title to add to their triumphs of 2003 and 2004.
Cameroon's Coton Sport beat DR Congo club TP Mazembe 1-0 in Garoua.
It was a stoppage-time goal at the end of the second half from Niger's Kamilou Daouda that gave Coton Sport three points.
Coton Sport are only the third Cameroonian side to contest the group phase and the last champions were Canon Yaounde in 1980.
The group winners and runners-up advance to two-leg semi-finals and the final is also staged on a home-and-away basis.
The champions will pocket US$1m and also secure a place at the annual Fifa Club World Cup in Japan.
