Pirates' Chenene Bennet tackles Kaizer Chiefs' Bhasera |
Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs drew 2-2 in the highlight of the South African season played in Durban. The match was moved from Soweto to focus attention on Sunday's World Cup draw also taking place in Durban.
The league match was broadcast live in Europe for the first time and the 45,000 crowd at Absa Stadium included Uefa president Michel Platini.
Confederation of African Football (Caf) president Issa Hayatou was also present at the game and will attend the draw.
A fixture once notorious for crowd trouble passed without incident and the only letdown for the colourfully dressed rival supporters was the wet, overcast conditions.

If the first clash of the Amakhosi (Chiefs) and Buccaneers outside Johannesburg was no football classic, a spate of errors produced countless scoring opportunities for both teams.
Chiefs were ahead within 19 seconds as striker Mabhuti Khenyeza shielded a throw-in from former Charlton Athletic striker Shaun Bartlett and turned to hammer the ball into the far corner of the net.
Excellent Walaza, one of the brightest hopes in a country short of rising football stars, equalised with a 34th-minute header off a Bennet Chenene cross as Pirates' territorial dominance reaped dividends.
Walaza struck again seven minutes after half-time, tapping in a rebound off goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune after Pirates carved open the middle of the Chiefs defence.
But the lead lasted just seven minutes before former Buccaneers midfielder Arthur Zwane headed home at the far post after a Pirates defensive mix-up off a throw in.
The result moved each club one place up the standings in the richest African national championship with Pirates lying eighth, seven points adrift of leaders Ajax Cape Town, and Chiefs 10th having played 10 of 30 fixtures.
