Martins will 'miss' Newcastle
Obafemi Martins
Martins admits he will miss Newcastle during the Cup of Nations
Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins says he will miss playing for English Premier League side Newcastle United during the 2008 African Cup of Nations.

"I have to play for my country - I think it is my duty to do so and if I did not it would cause problems.

"There is no reason not to - but despite this I will miss playing for Newcastle," Martins said.

The US$20m former Inter Milan hitman scored 17 goals in his first season with the club.

This season the Super Eagle has only started eight games but is set to lead Newcastle's attacking line now that England striker Michael Owen has been sidelined with injury for up to six weeks.

Consequently, the club could be short of firepower when the 23-year-old Nigerian leaves for the Nations Cup.

Martins said: "I feel I have been accepted here - I love the fans and I think they love me.

"I want to stay here for a few years, I think.

"The only thing I can do is keep scoring for them because it is so important to the fans.

"Getting goals and getting three points means a lot to the people here, and I have to work hard to do that."

Martins is currently training with Nigeria ahead of their friendly match against Switzerland on 20 November.
