Nigeria's Joseph Yobo will be missing when the Super Eagles take on Macedonia |
Nigeria and Everton defender Joseph Yobo will miss Nigeria's friendly against Macedonia after suffering a groin injury. The 26-year-old Super Eagle picked up the injury during Everton's opening Premier League game of the season against Wigan at Goodison Park.
He misses Saturday's Premier League encounter with Reading, and will be very doubtful for next weekend's contest against Blackburn Rovers.
"I suffered the groin trouble during the Wigan game and I had another slight injury against Tottenham, but I had to play through the pain," Yobo told BBC Sport on Saturday.
"The scan revealed only a slight tear but the doctor says I will have to rest it for two weeks."
It's only the second time in five years that Yobo will miss a game for the Super Eagles.
Ever present
"It's a minor setback, as I will not be available for the game against Macedonia on 22 August," he said.
"I have communicated that to the Nigerian FA and hopefully they will get in touch with the coach [Berti Vogts].
Without any unforeseen circumstance, I should be fit for the match against Lesotho next month."
Yobo had been an ever present figure for his country since the 2002 Nations Cup in Mali - missing his first game in five years only two months ago, when Nigeria beat Niger in a Cup of Nations qualifier.
He is a key member of the Everton squad, which has started the Premier League so well.
Last season, he became only the second player in Everton's history to play every minute of the club's 38-league matches.
The last time such a feat was achieved was when Kevin Ratcliffe, then captain, led Everton to the title in 1987.
