 | I am under pressure because it is 50 years since a Newcastle captain lifted a major trophy |
Newcastle new boy Geremi says he is proud to be leading his side as captain for the first time against Aston Villa tomorrow at St James's Park. The Cameroon international has clearly impressed manager Sam Allardyce since his free-transfer move from Chelsea.
"He gave me the armband in pre-season but I thought it was just a test, not permanent," he said.
"But before our first game this season he asked if I had the capability to be captain and I said 'no problem'."
"I am under pressure because it is 50 years since a Newcastle captain lifted a major trophy.
"But I think we will challenge this season and cause a few surprises."
Geremi's big day is expected to be boosted by the return of Michael Owen from a thigh injury.
The 17m England striker successfully negotiated a behind-closed-doors friendly against Gretna this week.
