Sundowns won their eighth league title on Sunday |
Mamelodi Sundowns won their eighth South African league title on Sunday without kicking a ball.
This was after their closest challengers Orlando Pirates were held to a goalless draw at home by Ajax Cape Town.
Pirates still had an outside mathematical chance of catching the defending champions but needed to win all their remaining five matches and hope Sundowns lost their last five.
The draw left Sundowns with have an unassailable lead on 56 points, 12 more than second placed Moroka Swallows, who have just three matches left.
Sundowns did not play at the weekend having been eliminated from the African Champions League by defending champions Ahly of Egypt in Cairo on Friday.
The title is the fourth for coach Gordon Igesund in the last 10 years - all achieved with different South African premier league clubs.
