The home side won the game thanks to a 52nd-minute strike by Portugal-based striker Lito.

Karim Ziani's second-half penalty earned Algeria a first competitive win since March 2005 after beating Gambia in Algiers.

The midfielder converted the kick for the home side after Rafik Saifi was brought down in the box with only 15 minutes remaining.

The Desert Foxes dominated the game but found the Gambia keeper in good form.

Algeria's last win in a competitive match was when they beat Rwanda 1-0 in the Nations Cup qualifiers in Oran last year.
