Wome was vilified for missing a crucial penalty |
Cameroon's Pierre Wome has turned down an invitation to join the national squad for Sunday's Nations Cup qualifier against Equatorial Guinea. The defender has not appeared for the Indomitable Lions since October 2005 when he missed a penalty that would have qualified Cameroon for the 2006 World Cup finals.
Wome was vilified by the public and large sections of the media and such was the abuse thrown in his direction that authorities were effectively forced to freeze him out of the national team.
But new head coach Arie Haan decided to rescind the unofficial ban and called up the Werder Bremen defender.
"We must have the best players in our team and Wome is one of the best," Arie Haan told BBC Sport.
But Wome is clearly unimpressed by the invitation and sources close to the player say he wants clear-the-air talks with Haan first.
"I will meet Wome and talk to him before inviting him again," Arie Haan said.
Meanwhile, Wome's place has been taken by Lucien Mettomo, the defender for FC Luzern in Switzerland.
Mettomo has been out of the team since the 2004 African Nations Cup finals in Tunisia.
