Wome missed a penalty against Egypt in a World Cup qualifier |
Cameroon legend Roger Milla says he is sorry to see Pierre Wome axed from the country's African Nations Cup squad.
Wome, who missed the penalty which would have taken his country to the World Cup finals, was excluded from the Indomitable Lions squad for the tournament in Egypt.
The Italy-based player fluffed a last-minute penalty against Egypt in November which would have qualified Cameroon for the 2006 World Cup in Germany in place of the Ivory Coast.
Five years earlier, Wome scored the winning spot-kick when Cameroon beat Spain in a shoot-out to win the Olympic gold medal in Sydney.
"I regret he hasn't been picked. It's a pity," said Milla, the star of Cameroon's run to the 1990 World Cup finals.
"Everyone can miss a penalty. When he scored the last penalty in Sydney, no one said anything. We forgot quickly. Now we want to assassinate him.
"He is a super player who can bring a lot to the team. I hope his non-selection (for the Nations Cup) isn't political and that it's the choice of the coach (Artur Jorge)."
Cameroon fans, furious at their team's failure to make the World Cup, took out their frustration by surrounding the stadium in Yaounde and not allowing the players to leave after Wome's miss against Egypt.
