Jaidi wheels away after scoring his last-minute goal against Saudi Arabia |
Tunisian defender Radhi Jaidi has announced his retirement from international football.
The 31-year-old has been pondering his future since Tunisia's disappointing World Cup showing in June.
Jaidi, who won the 2004 Nations Cup with the Carthage Eagles, made his international debut in 1996 against Rwanda.
"This is a decision I took following the World Cup," the tall figure told Tunisian radio station Mosaique FM.
"I want to think about my future and I am also very disappointed by certain developments (in the national team set-up)."
The Birmingham City player was capped 92 times by Tunisia, for whom he scored six goals.
The last of these salvaged a 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia at the World Cup, gaining the Tunisians their only point in the group stages in Germany.
"Jaidi has expressed his desire to no longer play for the national team," coach Roger Lemerre said at a news conference where he named his squad for next month's Nations Cup qualifier against Sudan.
Jaidi, who became the first Tunisian to play in the English Premiership, is the second key defender to retire from Roger Lemerre's side after Hatem Trabelsi stepped down in June.
The former Bolton Wanderers and Esperance star also played at the 2002 World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea.
