Cafu has been included in the Cape Verde's latest squad |
The Cape Verde Islands have called up 19-year-old midfielder Romy to their squad for their World Cup qualifier in Burkina Faso on 26 March. Coach Alexandre Alhinho will again go with a 17-man squad mainly made up of Portugal-based players but has also included the teenager, who is considered the best talent on the island archipelago.
There is also a first call-up for Pina, who plays for Torrense in Portugal's third division.
Alhinho has however dropped five overseas-based players from the squad that beat the Burkinabe in Praia 1-0 last October.
The coach has failed in his bid to attract more top name players of Cape Verdian descent to join his squad after a trip to Portugal last week.
He met with four players at Belenenses - Pel, Rodolfo Lima, Eliseu and Rolando - as well as Nelson of high-riding Boavista to try and again persuade them to pledge their international future to the island team.
But Alhinho said he had been unable to convince them and that all five said they would prefer to try and make future Portuguese national team selections.
The Cape Verde Islands lie fourth in their 2006 World Cup qualifying group, behind South Africa, Ghana and the DR Congo, but still have high hopes of qualifying for a first ever appearance at the African Nations Cup finals in Egypt next January.
