Winfried Schafer is yet to be told that he has been fired by Cameroon |
German coach Winfried Schafer has said that he is yet to be officially informed that he has been sacked as the coach of Cameroon. Speaking exclusively to BBC Sport from his home in Germany on Friday, he insisted: "I'm still the coach of Cameroon."
Schafer's comments come two days after a statement by the minister for Youth and Sport Siegfried David Etame Massoma that he had been fired.
The Ministers dismissal "on grounds of grievous misconduct and poor results" was read out on national radio in Cameroon minutes after their 3-0 loss to Germany on Wednesday.
However Schafer insists: "The only person who has told me that I am sacked is a journalist and a barman at the hotel."
"This is not fair, it lacks courage," Schafer said.
"I will work today, tomorrow, forever for Cameroon."
"I'm from Germany, but I am Cameroonian."
He added that the relationship between himself and the minister had always been good.
"I've already sent the minister a match report and faxes detailing my plans for the future development of Cameroonian local and youth soccer."
Having been in charge since 2001, recent poor performances in World Cup qualification matches had led to calls from fans and the Cameroonian media for him to be sacked.
Recently midfielder Modeste Mbami decided that he would not play for the national team as long as Schaefer remained in charge.
Mbami's comments seemed to confirm rumours of a rift between the players and the coach and his captain Rigobert Song.
"Rigobert Song is the last lion in the team and we have a lot of young players and we need respect," he said.
"Mbami lacks both respect and discipline."
