Cameroon coach Winfried Schaefer has come under fire again

Winfried Schaefer's postion as coach of Cameroon has once again come under fire this time from national technical director Robert Corfou.

It is the first time the Frenchman, who has overseen all footballing matters in Cameroon, from development through to liaising with national coaches at all levels, since 2000 has publicly criticised the German coach.

"Schaefer is very stubborn and he refuses to collaborate with others," Corfou said.

"He works alone."

Corfou, who was appointed by the Ministry of Sports four years ago, criticised Schaefer for not living in Cameroon and therefore being unable to guage the feelings of local fans.

"Cameroon need a coach who stays in the country, but Schaefer is not like me.

"I live in Cameroon, I work with them every day and I know their preoccupations," Corfou said.

If they (football authorities) call me to bring my expertises, I won't hesitate

Since Schaefer was recruited in September 2001, he has rarely spent more than two weeks at a time in Cameroon.

Indeed a planned trip to Yaounde this week by Schaefer after an absence of more than two months has been postponed and therefore has not responded to Corfou's comments.

The Frenchman, who took was the caretaker coach of the Indomitable Lions for their final two 2002 World Cup qualifiers, has also offered to step in and coach the Indomitable Lions should he be needed.

"If they (football authorities) call me to bring my expertises, I won't hesitate," he said.

Schaefer has come under fire from fans for Cameroon's poor performance in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers so far, they stand four points adrift of Group Three leaders Ivory Coast.

Football officials in Cameroon have also recently denied that there are any problems between Schaefer and some of his players.
