 Martins twisted knee ligaments |
Nigerian hotshot Obafemi Martins will miss the World Cup qualifier away to Angola next weekend after failing to recover from a knee injury. Martins, who plays for Italian Serie 'A' side Inter Milan, twisted knee ligaments when he made his home debut for the Super Eagles against Rwanda on 5 June.
Nineteen-year-old Martins scored both goals as Nigeria launched their campaign for Germany 2006 with a 2-0 win over Rwanda in Abuja.
But the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) disclosed on Saturday that Martins will not be fit for the encounter in Luanda on 20 June.
He has been replaced by Datti Aliyu Mohammed of Standard Liege.
Ayegbeni has made peace with the NFA |
Two other players, Kalu Uche of Wisla Krakow and Waheed Adewale from AS Roma, have also been called up in place of Christian Obodo and Ifeanyi Udeze, who is also nursing a knee injury. The availability of captain Jay-Jay Okocha remains a big doubt as the NFA have yet to establish any contact with the midfielder.
Meanwhile, striker Yakubu Ayegbeni has apparently settled his rift with the NFA and will be available for the tie at home to Algeria next month.
Ayegbeni, along with Chelsea defender Celestine Babayaro and Victor Agali, was thrown out of Nigeria's squad during the African Nations Cup in Tunisia for allegedly breaking camp rules.
"I'm happy that we have ironed our differences and I'm now looking forward to play for my country again," said the striker after a meeting with NFA's Taiwo Ogunjobi.
"If I'm picked for the Algeria match, I will be available."
Ayegbeni was called up for the three-nation Unity Cup in London last month but stayed away in protest at how he was expelled from the team in Tunisia.
