Kenya's Sports Minister Najib Balala ordered the arrests |
Three officials of the disbanded Kenya Football Federation (KFF)who were arrested by the police have been freed.
Maina Kariuki (chairman), Mohammed Hatimy (treasurer) and Hussein Swaleh (secretary) were released on bail on Friday.
Kariuki was arrested on Thursday after appearing on a television chat show in Nairobi, while Hatimy was picked up in Mombasa on Wednesday and flown to Nairobi. Swaleh was arrested in Nairobi.
The three officials were questioned by Kenya's Anti-Corruption Commission and police officials over alleged corruption in the KFF.
Kariuki, Hatimy and Swaleh will make an appearance in court on Monday.
During a television talk show Balala seemed determined not to give into Fifa's request for the government not to interfere in the internal affairs of the KFF and requested that the world football governing body review its laws.
"Fifa needs to review its Articles and Statutes because the government has a moral obligation in the running of the sport in any country," he observed.
His comments come after Fifa slapped an indefinite ban on Kenya from international football for alleged government interference.
The Minister explained that he was powerless to re-install the current KFF officials as required by Fifa.
"These are court orders which I cannot go against," he said.
