Kenya will not be allowed to play against Guinea |
Fifa slapped an indefinite suspension on Kenya on Wednesday because of alleged government interference in the affairs of the Kenya Football Federation (KFF). The move follows the government's refusal to comply with an order to reinstate the KFF executive committee which was fired early this year.
The KFF was dissolved by the country's Sports Minister Najib Balala on 25 March, accusing it of incompetence.
Last week, a deadline of midnight on 1 June was imposed on the authorities in Nairobi to reverse their decision.
The ban affects the country's national team and clubs which will not be allowed to take part in any international tournament.
Kenya are due to play their first 2006 World Cup qualifier on 5 June.
The KFF has been at loggerheads with the government for several months over allegations of financial mismanagement.
Balala suspended the KFF executive headed by Maina Kariuki and replaced it with an interim body ahead of new elections which have yet to be held.
But Fifa took exception to the move, accusing the Kenyan government of "violating regulations, refusing attempts to resolve the situation while meddling in the affairs of football".
Fifa general secretary Urs Linzi, in a letter to the ousted Kariuki, said Fifa was left with no other option after it became clear Balala was unwilling to reinstate KFF officials.
"Such a change of approach is a prerequisite in order for a genuine dialogue to be launched between the Kenyan government, KFF and FIFA to allow all parties to work together to help Kenyan football solve its problems," said Linzi in his letter.
Kariuki said his committee had done everything possible to avert the ban and blamed the government.
Fifa also banned Guinea from the international stage in 2001 when the government dissolved the country's football federation.
