 Enyimba celebrate yet again |
Holders Enyimba are through to the semi-finals of this year's Champions League after a 1-1 draw with Malawi's Bakili Bullets in Blantyre on Saturday.
A win for the Malawian side in the Group A match would have seen them grab an unlikely place in the last four but Enyimba were able to withstand the home pressure, draw 1-1 and progress to next month's semi-finals.
Enyimba are joined in the final four by Tunisia's Etoile Sahel, who topped Group A despite their 3-2 defeat by Africa Sports in Abidjan.
The end of the match in Blantyre was followed by stone-throwing incidents, the second successive week there has been crowd violence at the Kamuzu stadium.
Referee Eugene Colembi from Angola was struck by a stone that had been pelted from the crowd of frustrated home fans following Bullets' failure to qualify.
Yet the Angolan official was not injured.
The start of the match was also delayed by 25 minutes because of concerns over security for an overflowing crowd, estimated to number some 50,000.
Emeka Nwanna scored 10 minutes before half-time to give Enyimba the lead after the visitors had squandered a penalty.
Robert Ngami equalised in the 62nd minute but Bullets' cause was hampered by the dismissal 15 minutes from time of midfielder Fisher Kondowe.
Enyimba now play Group B winners Esperance in the semi-finals.
