Enyimba put six past Bullets |
Defending champions Enyimba of Nigeria overwhelmed Bakili Bullets of Malawi 6-0 on Sunday to stay on top of Group A in the Champions League.
Joetex Frimpong opened the scoring for the hosts after just four minutes when he lobbed the ball beyond Malawian goalkeeper Swadick Sanudi.
Striker Ndidi Anumnu doubled Enyimba's advantage after 21 minutes, even though the Nigerian champions' attacks were being restricted by a muddy pitch.
The Nigerian team converted a penalty kick through Onyekachi Okonkwo two minutes into the second half, after big striker Ekene Ezenwa was brought down by a Malawian defender on his way to goal.
In a busy game, the 20,000 fans then saw the referee disallow midfielder Okonkwo's 65th-minute effort, after Ezenwa had strayed offside, as the Nigerian champions continued to attack.
Enyimba were then rewarded with three goals from Benin international Muri Ogunbiyi and substitute Chibuzor Ozurumba, who netted twice in stoppage time.
The Aba-based side went on the offensive straight from the kick-off and dominated the opening twenty minutes but after the second goal, the Bullets fought back with international forward Fisher Kondowe asking the most serious questions of the Nigerian defence.
Enyimba goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama was forced to make two notable saves in the first half, in the eleventh and 42nd minutes, as Malawi came out of their defensive shell.
The defending champions now lead Group A with a maximum six points from two matches.
Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia and Africa Sports of Ivory Coast are the other teams in the group.
