Sports Minister Musa Mohammed has criticised the Nigerian FA |
The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has come under severe criticism from the country's Sports Minister Musa Mohammed. Mohammed said that the NFA lacks the managerial ability to operate independently.
"We've heard so much from the press clamouring for an independent NFA but the question is whether they can survive on their own, in my opinion the answer is an absolute no," he said.
"Football is a big business but the opposite is the case when it comes to the NFA."
He pointed to the example of the kit deal the NFA sealed Adidas describing it as laughable and disgusting.
The minister went onto insist that the association will remain under the control of the sports ministry.
"I asked the FA why they prefered Adidas to the other better offers and they naively said that Adidas are well known while the others weren't.
"If you allow the NFA to be run independently, this is the type of rubbish they will bring to you, it's absolutely disgusting," Mohammed concluded.
NFA chairman Ibrahim Galadima, however, pointed out that the sports ministry approved their deal with Adidas.
"The minister was aware of the deal because we didn't decide on our own," he said.
"People should understand that the NFA has shortcomings like every other government establishment."
The latest comments from the minister seem to contradict the latest recommendations from Fifa.
World football's governing bidy said Nigeria face a ban if the government continues to interfere in football matters.
Football in Nigeria has been governed by Decree 101 since 1992.
The decrees allows Nigeria's government to nominate the NFA secretary-general and nominate four members to its board.
