Blatter said Fifa would not tolerate political interference

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has declared they will order changes to the law governing Nigeria's Football Association (NFA) if the present statute compromises their independence.

Speaking to BBC Sport at the Fifa presidential press briefing in London on Monday, Blatter said Fifa is ready to examine the current law, which permits the Nigerian government to appoint the NFA secretary-general, the body's chief executive, and nominate four people to the NFA board.

"According to our statutes, political interference is not permitted and we are dealing with cases affecting the Ethiopian and Zambian federations.

We are prepared to take steps

"We are not aware of the case in Nigeria, because we are not the police.

"We shall control [the situation in Nigeria] but [we shall only] control [it] when the matter is brought to our attention."

Blatter told BBC Sport they will examine a copy of the NFA's enabling law as soon as it is received at their headquarters and would order reforms if they are required.

Critics of the current law, which came into force in 1991, have argued that it has been responsible for the instability in Nigerian football administration.

Many commentators have advocated for reform which would ensure that the government plays no further part in the NFA's internal affairs.

But efforts to have the National Assembly, the legislative arm of Nigeria's government, take a second look at the law have been unsuccessful.
