Esperance beat SuperSport United 2-0 in the Champions League |
Esperance of Tunisia booked their place in the last four of the African Champions League with a 2-0 win over South Africa's SuperSport United. The win, in a rainy Tunis, means Esperance will finish winners of Group B and thereby keeps them apart from Group A winners Etoile Sahel in the semi- finals.
After a slow start it was SuperSport United who created the early chances through a Phil Evans free kick and a close range shot by Aubin Takutchie, both of which were well saved by goalkeeper Jean-Jacques Tizie.
But the Tunisians came back into the game as they started to assert themselves through Skander Souayah, Mourad Melki and Karim Ghazi who dominated matters in midfield.
It was a superb strike from the edge of the penalty area into the top right hand corner of the net by the dangerous Ali Zitouni that gave Esperance the lead in the 36th minute.
Tunisian international Jaouhar Mnari doubled the lead early in the second half with an equally good goal from outside the box after a good layoff by Melki.
To their credit, SuperSport didn't give up and they came close to scoring when the impressive Tico Tico Bucuane saw his shot go wide after Hakim Nouira saw his clearance hit his own crossbar.
The Mozambican international had little support with the result that the Esperance defence, which played without their suspended captain Khalid Badra, had a relatively easy ninety minutes.
