Senegal's Jeanne d'Arc beat SuperSport in the Champions League |
Senegal's Jeanne D'Arc moved into second place in Group B of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over South Africa's SuperSport United. The win puts them on seven points, two behind leaders Esperance and one ahead of USMA.
SuperSport are bottom with just a single point from their four games and now cannot make the semi-finals.
After an action packed first half in which both sides missed several excellent chances, Jeanne d'Arc scored twice in the space of ten minutes midway through the second half to seal a well-deserved victory.
Masseye Gaye opened the scoring on the hour mark when he was first to react after substitute Dame Ndoye's long range free kick rebounded off the crossbar.
Ten minutes later Makhete Ndiaye doubled the lead with a superbly taken volley after doing well to chest down Niokhor Fall's awkward cross from the right.
Jeanne d' Arc missed five chances in as many minutes during a spell of sustained pressure midway through the first half as SuperSport goalkeeper Grant Johnson also pulled off a superb save from Mousse Niang's close-range shot.
Having successfully weathered that torrid period SuperSport United finished the half strongly.
Mozambican international Tico Tico Bucuane and Abram Raselemane both saw their shots roll tantalizingly past the upright with Jeanne d'Arc goalkeeper Mamadou Diouf well beaten.
Next up for Jeanne d'Arc is an away trip to USMA of Algeria on 24 September while two days later SuperSport have the daunting task of travelling to group leaders Esperance of Tunisia.
