Ghana coach Mariano Barreto has quit his post to take charge of Portuguese side Maritimo. Barreto replaces Manuel Caduja, who was dismissed after Maritimo lost 3-0 to Belenenses in their opening game of the Portuguese championship.
"I hope to fulfil the club's wishes and ambitions and please the board and the supporters," Barreto told uefa.com.
"It was the club's standing that made me leave Ghana to join Maritimo."
Although Maritimo's press officer, Pedro Pereira, confirmed the appointment to BBC Sport he was unable to confirm the length and financial details of the contract.
Barreto's decision to join Maritimo has taken Ghana's Football Association, GFA, by surprise.
GFA Chairman Dr Nyaho Tamakloe told BBC Sport that Barreto, who left the country after Sunday's Group Two World Cup qualifier, had not informed them of his decision to quit the national manager's job.
But the Portuguese coach made a cryptic comment to reporters, wishing Ghana "all the best for the future" after leading the Black Stars to a 2-0 victory over Cape Verde in Kumasi.
Barreto, who piloted Ghana to the 2004 Olympic football tournament, has also been on the coaching staff at Sporting Lisbon, Bayer Leverkusen and Lokomotiv Moscow.
