Barreto said his players did not disgrace Ghana at the Olympics |
Ghana coach Mariano Barreto is confident that the country has a promising international future despite their first-round exit at the Olympics. The West Africans failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the football event after losing 1-0 to Japan in their final group tie.
"I don't think we need to worry about the future of the game in Ghana," said Barreto in an interview with Fifa.com.
"This team includes maybe six or seven exceptional youngsters, playing in the best European leagues.
"Tomorrow's a new day and we'll focus on the future now."
Barreto acknowledged the fact that Ghana's failure to hold onto their 2-0 lead in their opening group match against Italy was a costly mistake that ultimately led to their elimination.
"I'm obviously angry that we tossed away a 2-0 lead against Italy.
"But we didn't get the best of the refereeing decisions either, although one has to say referees do make mistakes."
Barreto said his young squad, in which Juventus playmaker Stephen Appiah played a key role, put up a good performance at the Olympics.
"They gave everything they could and they've had a good tournament.
"I reckon everyone in Ghana should be proud of this team."
